The Ultimate Birthday Party Guide

A couple of weeks ago someone called and asked, "Do you do birthday parties for adults?"

We laughed a little because somehow people still think birthdays are only a kid thing.

The answer, of course, is yes.

We celebrate first birthdays, fortieth birthdays, surprise birthdays, "I'm not telling you how old I am" birthdays, and birthdays where Grandma ends up painting a dinosaur because that's what her grandson picked out.

After twenty-five years, we've learned something kind of funny. It almost never matters what age you're turning. A room full of people making something together ends up looking pretty much the same no matter who's blowing out the candles. Someone gets way too competitive, someone insists they "aren't creative" before making everyone's favorite piece, and somebody always laughs so hard they almost spill the paint water. It's one of our favorite things to watch.

Kids' Birthday Parties

If you've ever hosted a birthday party for a kid, you know the real challenge isn't finding something fun to do. It's finding something fun that doesn't leave your house looking like a tornado came through.

That's one of the reasons parents tell us they love celebrating here. The kids stay busy, everyone gets to make something they're excited to take home, and when the party's over...you don't have to vacuum frosting out of your carpet. Even better, every guest leaves with something they actually made. It's a party favor they don't outgrow by Tuesday.

Adult Birthdays

We honestly think adults deserve birthday parties even more than kids.

Life gets busy. Between work, kids, sports, errands, and trying to remember what's for dinner, it's surprisingly hard to get everyone in the same room.

A birthday gives us permission to slow down for a couple of hours.

Bring your friends, bring your favorite snacks, maybe bring a bottle of wine, and spend an evening laughing over pottery instead of shouting across a noisy restaurant. We've watched friends catch up after months apart, sisters spend an evening together without interruptions, and entire friend groups discover that one person is unexpectedly amazing at painting mushrooms.

It's never really about the pottery.

The pottery just gives everyone a reason to gather.

Milestone Birthdays

Some birthdays deserve a little extra. Thirty feels different than twenty-nine.

Fifty feels different than forty-nine. And ninety? Well, we're throwing the biggest party we can. Those milestone birthdays are some of our favorites because families come from all over. Grandkids meet cousins they haven't seen in years. Old friends tell stories they've apparently been saving for decades. Everyone ends up sitting around one table making something with their hands while talking about everything else.

It's amazing how often pottery becomes the excuse for the reunion people have been meaning to plan anyway.

Private Parties

Not every celebration has to happen in the middle of open studio.

If you'd rather have the place to yourselves, we can do that too.
