This Weekend at KC | September 10–13
Sometimes we look at the calendar we've created and realize that explaining Kiln Creations to someone who has never been here must be an absolutely wild experience.
Because this weekend we're making plague doctors out of clay, getting a little elevated and painting pottery, permanently squishing hugs into vases, celebrating the wonderfully unsettling world of Stephen King, and then finishing everything off by learning how to throw bowls on the pottery wheel.
You know. Normal art studio things.
Here's what we're up to this weekend at KC.
Our Thursday night Creatures & Curiosities series continues this week with something delightfully weird: a Plague Doctor Luminary.
If you've ever looked at one of history's most ominous figures and thought, "That would make adorable home décor," congratulations. You've found your people.
We'll be working with clay to create our own plague doctors, complete with that unmistakable beaked mask and plenty of room to add your own personality and details. Make yours creepy, whimsical, ancient-looking, completely ridiculous, or the sort of tiny ominous fellow who looks like he knows something about your future but has been instructed not to tell you.
No clay experience is necessary. We'll walk you through the process, and once everything has been fired, you'll have a handmade piece of spooky décor that you can confidently tell people you made yourself.
This is exactly the sort of nonsense we created Creatures & Curiosities for.
Friday night we're taking pottery painting to a slightly higher plane.
High Art is exactly what it sounds like: a relaxed night for grown-ups to come hang out, paint pottery, get creative and perhaps arrive with their creative inhibitions already...lowered.
Pick whatever pottery speaks to you, settle in, and see what happens when you stop worrying quite so much about whether your lines are straight or your colors make sense. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your creativity is stop trying so hard to make something "good" and just make something that makes you happy.
We have hundreds of pottery choices, plenty of glazes, silkscreens, specialty glazes and tools if inspiration strikes, and absolutely no requirement that your finished masterpiece make sense to anyone except you.
We're just providing the art supplies.
Whatever inspires your artistic vision beforehand is between you and you.😏
Saturday gets considerably more sentimental.
Our Hugging Vase Experience starts with a large vase that we've already thrown on the pottery wheel and carefully timed so it's at exactly the right stage when you arrive. Then you bring someone you love, wrap your arms around the vase together, and actually press your embrace into the clay.
Your arms. Their arms. Your hands and fingerprints and the shape of the way the two of you fit together.
All left behind in the vase.
Afterward, you'll decorate it together and we'll take care of the firing, leaving you with something that isn't just pretty pottery sitting on a shelf. It's an actual physical impression of the two of you in this particular moment in your lives.
Bring your spouse, your best friend, your mom, your dad, your kid, your sibling, your grandparent or whoever you wish you could bottle up exactly as they are right now.
We can't actually stop time.
But this gets surprisingly close.

Saturday night we're celebrating Stephen King, which gives us an absolutely enormous playground of wonderfully unsettling inspiration. Whether your heart belongs in Derry, at the Overlook Hotel, somewhere in Castle Rock, or you just really appreciate a good creepy clown, this is your excuse to turn your favorite bit of horror into pottery.
Choose your pottery when you arrive and we'll help you figure out how to translate your inspiration onto it. You don't need to be able to freehand an elaborate portrait or recreate a book cover from memory—we have techniques, tools and plenty of tricks to help you create something you're excited to take home.
Come with your favorite book in mind, bring a fellow Constant Reader, and prepare for a perfectly strange Saturday night.
We can't promise nothing supernatural will happen.
We do have kilns, after all.
After four days of plague doctors, High Art, emotional pottery and horror, we're ending the weekend by getting our hands into some clay.
In Sunday's clay class, you'll get to experience two completely different ways of working with clay in one session: throwing a bowl on the pottery wheel and handbuilding a coordinating plate.
It's a really fun introduction to clay because wheel throwing and handbuilding feel completely different. One involves convincing a spinning lump of clay to cooperate with you while pretending you are completely calm, and the other gives you a little more time to slow down, shape, texture and add your own details.
You don't need previous pottery experience for either one. We'll guide you through the process and help you create a set that's completely yours.
Will your bowl and plate match perfectly?
Maybe.
Will they have personality?
Absolutely.
And personally, we'd rather have personality.
Come Make Something Weird with Us
Whether this is your first visit or we've reached the point where you know where we keep the good brushes, there's room for you this weekend.
Come make something creepy. Come make something meaningful. Come learn a new skill. Come paint something that makes absolutely no sense but brings you immense joy.
Or just walk in during regular studio hours, pick something off the shelf and spend a couple of hours making something with your own hands.
We'll take care of the supplies, the firing and the inevitable moment when you look at your project halfway through and wonder what you've done.
